VANOC Releases 2006-2007 Sustainability Report

The Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic Games (VANOC) is committed to delivering a socially, economically and environmentally responsible Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2010. As a part of this responsibility they have released their second sustainability report.

Areas that VANOC has made progress in:
  • building venues on compact sites that minimize waste from construction
  • building venues that:
  • conserve water and energy
  • reduce greenhouse gas/carbon emissions
  • provide barrier-free accessibility
  • compliance with environmental regulations
  • training opportunities for inner-city youth
  • support for housing legacies
  • ethical sourcing and sustainable purchasing
  • economic opportunities for Aboriginal peoples
  • raising awareness about sport among Aboriginal communities
  • raising awareness about Paralympic sports locally
  • workforce safety

Areas VANOC says it's working on improving and/or focusing on over the next 12 months include:
  • transportation planning
  • avoiding disruption or displacement in inner-city communities during Games-time
  • additional reductions in carbon emissions and development of a program for neutralizing or offsetting the carbon footprint of the Games
  • food and beverage services
  • diverting further waste from landfill
  • training, recruitment and business opportunities for inner-city residents and businesses, Aboriginal communities, persons with a disability, and social and environmental enterprises
  • public participation opportunities that increase awareness of sustainable living choices

Official Supplier: Aquilini Investment Group

The Aquilini Investment Group, owners of the Vancouver Canucks and General Motors Place, has inked a deal to provide between $3 and 15M of in-kind services to VANOC. (The figure of $3-15M comes from the threshold of $3M for tier three sponsorship, which this falls under.)

Last year another deal was reached between the two groups to rent the arena for a lump-sum of $18.5M and a daily rate of $110,000.

Olympic Torch Leaves Athens Bound for Beijing

From A to B without mention of T. The Olympic Torch left Athens after a small ceremony to take the long journey to the capital city of the People's Republic of China, Beijing. From there the torch will take a 20 country tour before making its' way back to Beijing to mark the start of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games.

The 2008 Beijing Olympics and everything associated with them are becoming more and more of a lightning rod in light of recent uprisings by Buddhist monks in Tibet which has been occupied since being invaded in 1950 by the Chinese authorities. Protests along the torch route, leading up to the games, and throughout the competitions are highly anticipated.

More news on the torch's journey from Athens from the Toronto Star.

Canada Wins Curling Gold

The Canadian women have won curling gold at the 2008 World Championships held in Vernon, British Columbia. Jennifer Jones lead her team to victory over Bingyu Wang and her squad.

The foursome (or 'rink' as it's referred to in curling lingo) from Winnipeg managed to beat the team from China in the 10 end. The final score was 7-4.

Granville Mall Reno

One of the most interesting, yet at times troubled, streets in Vancouver has been under extensive construction for the RAV line that will connect the Vancouver International Airport with Richmond and Vancouver, all the way to the downtown core.

The details of an $11M renovation to be completed in time for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games has just been unveiled. The makeover will include festival spaces, potential use for video presentations on the giant white wall of the Sears department store, and vertical lighting. The sidewalks will also be widened to increase safety and pedestrian flow.

Granville Street is home to many of the city's more edgy brands and includes homes for some of it's most iconic including John Fluevogs. Other notable tenants include The Sony Store, Winners, Future Shop, Cafe Crepe, and many of the city's clubs and bars.
